THE ACNE BREAKOUTS What's really happening?
A breakout of acne vulgaris (the common form of
acne) starts deep in the skin's follicles-simple
tubes that extend from your pores down to subsurface
oil glands. The oil, or sebum, produced by these
glands has the job of carrying dead skin cells up
through the follicle to the surface of your skin,
as part of the body's awesome system of skin renewal.
However, the system doesn't always work smoothly.
Overwhelm it with excess oil or cells, and follicles
can become plugged. When such a plug nestles under
the skin's surface, it's known as a whitehead. When
it becomes exposed to air, which oxidizes its contents
and turns them dark, it's a blackhead. As annoying
as those problems are, the real trouble may be just
beginning. The stage is set for a normally occurring
skin bacterium, Propionibacterium acnes, to undergo
a population explosion in the fertile environment
of the clogged follicle, and cause the surface swelling
and redness commonly known as a pimple or zit.
ACNE HOME TREATMENT
- WHAT WORKS AND WHY Increased hormonal activity, with its
sebum revving qualities, is considered one of the
main triggers for acne, which is why this skin condition
plagues adolescents. However, age doesn’t
grant immunity and it’s estimated that at
least 85% of people are affected by acne at some
point in their lives. The good news is that effective
at-home acne skin care is available, and understanding
the true nature of a breakout is the key to finding
the best acne products.
BACTERIA OVERGROWTH IS
THE ENEMY The severity of acne ranges from papules—small
pink bumps that can be tender—all the way
to cysts— the deep, painful pus-filled pimples
that can cause scarring. The more bacteria, the
worse the problem. So the goal of treatment is to
minimize the damage by minimizing bacterial growth.
BACTERIA LOVES A 'MESSY' ENVIROMENT Anything that can block pore openings
and impede free flow contributes to clogging and
breakouts. That makes regular and thorough removal
of surface oil, dead skin cells and make-up critical
to prevention and treatment. However, harsh cleaners
or determined scrubbing can irritate skin, increase
inflammation and make acne worse (just like picking
at pimples). The healthiest regimen combines gentle
but effective daily cleaning and regular exfoliation
through glycolic peels or microdermabrasion.

If you’re interested in rejuvenating your skin, you might be wondering about the differences between microdermabrasion and glycolic peels. Both treatments will resurface and exfoliate the skin by removing the superficial outer layer. However, microdermabrasion and glycolic peels involve a different means of attaining the desired results and are recommended for different skin types and [...]
Sometimes we do things a certain way just because “that’s the way we’ve always done it”. This is true even in our skin care routines sometimes. You may try a new product here and there if you think it will make a big difference but ultimately, you don’t change the basics like how you wash [...]
At home peels are a common and logical skin care choice for those who are looking to rejuvenate their complexion to achieve a smoother texture and younger appearance. A chemical home peel works to exfoliate and remove layers of dead skin cells for a more affordable price than going to a doctor’s office or a [...]
A chemical skin peel is an effective method used to rejuvenate the skin, treat acne, and improve the skin’s overall appearance. While glycolic facial peels and salicylic acid peels were at one time solely performed by dermatologists, physicians, or skin care professionals, there are now at home peels which are just as effective and yet [...]
When it comes to at home peels, it can be confusing when you are trying to decide which one to try. You have probably heard the good and the bad during your research including people who have had amazing results and some who have had some downright scary results. This is why alpha-hydroxy chemical home [...]
People who have acne scars, whether mild or severe, are never fully happy with their appearance. These red blemishes are difficult to cover and never seem to fade very much on their own. With certain chemical peel treatments however, acne scars can either fade drastically or even disappear completely. It does take time and consistency [...]
Are you thinking about trying a chemical skin peel and wondering where to start?
There are many different kinds of home face peels. One formula might be better suited for your skin than another – how do you know what to choose? One important factor in the differences in home face peels is the pH level.

Both chemical peel treatments and microdermabrasion treatments are used to resurface and exfoliate the skin. The treatments work in different ways to achieve similar results.
Microdermabrasion is recommended to improve superficial skin imperfections. This includes mild acne scars, age spots or sun spots, enlarged or visible pores, and fine lines. A chemical peel, whether it is [...]
Microdermabrasion is a type of treatment for the skin in which tiny crystals are applied to the skin to remove the top layer by “sanding” or “polishing”. The microdermabrasion crystals work to remove the dead surface layer of skin cells to uncover a healthier layer of skin underneath. Personal microdermabrasion treatments work to stimulate the [...]
Jessner’s Peel is a combination chemical skin peel treatment which has been proven effective in peeling away the superficial layers of the skin. It is a light chemical peel which is a combination of resorcinol, salicylic acid, and lactic acid. This combination provides more significant results than these ingredients used alone to achieve better exfoliation [...]
