WHAT ARE AGE
SPOTS
As we age, our skin becomes more vulnerable to sun
damage. The term "age spots" (also known as sun
spots or lentigos) refers to brownish spots that
appear on one's face and body in areas typically
exposed to sunlight. These spots are caused by a
build-up of melanin, a pigment in our skin that
absorbs sunlight and helps to protect us from harmful
UV rays. As we get older, our skin's ability to
fend off these UV rays begins to diminish, and we
may then see the development of age spots. Hormones
can also be a factor in skin-pigmentation disorders.
In conjunction with exposure to strong sunlight,
the female hormones estrogen and progesterone can
cause the pigment-producing cells, or melanocytes,
to over-produce. Women who are pregnant, taking
birth control pills, or having hormone replacement
therapy can develop a type of hyperpigmentation
called melasma, which typically appears on the face
as light brown patches.
HOW TO TREAT AGE
SPOTS
Sun avoidance and sun protection, including the
regular use of sunscreen, may help to suppress the
appearance of all types of skin-pigmentation disorders,
including freckles, moles, melasma, and age spots.
If you must be in the sun, use a sunscreen with
an SPF (sun protection factor) of at least 15. It
should be a broad-spectrum sunscreen, which means
that it blocks both UVA (ultraviolet A) and UVB
(ultraviolet B) rays. If age spots are already present,
be of good cheer--there is still hope! Microdermabrasion
is a procedure where microscopic particles "sand"
or "polish" the skin. Gradually, over several treatments,
the discolored epidermal tissue is literally polished
away. The outermost surface of the skin is partially
or completely removed by gentle abrasion, eliminating
the dark spots caused by sun damage. The turnover
of surface cells is enhanced, and the skin becomes
visibly fresher. The procedure is not painful and
usually requires no anaesthetic. Another option
is a skin-lightening treatment containing a 2% solution
of hydroquinone. Hydroquinone is a strong inhibitor
of melanin production, meaning that it prevents
the skin from making the substance responsible for
dark spots and sun-induced discoloration. Hydroquinone
disrupts the synthesis and production of melanin;
it does not bleach the skin!

If you’re interested in rejuvenating your skin, you might be wondering about the differences between microdermabrasion and glycolic peels. Both treatments will resurface and exfoliate the skin by removing the superficial outer layer. However, microdermabrasion and glycolic peels involve a different means of attaining the desired results and are recommended for different skin types and [...]
When people think of the words “anti aging” more than likely the first thought that comes to mind in terms of skin care products is anti-wrinkle cream. If you are taking your skin care into your own hands as opposed to visiting an esthetician on a regular basis, it is important to use quality skin care products and treatments. This means foregoing the cheaper (and often ineffective) commercial products that you will find in any drugstore. In order to be effective, certain [...]
Sometimes we do things a certain way just because “that’s the way we’ve always done it”. This is true even in our skin care routines sometimes. You may try a new product here and there if you think it will make a big difference but ultimately, you don’t change the basics like how you wash [...]
