OILY SKIN - TOO MUCH OFA GOOD THING!
We all have sebaceous glands. These oil-producing glands are most plentiful in the deep skin layers of the face, neck, chest and back, where hair follicles provide the oil with a clear path to the surface. Sebum—skin oil—is a very useful substance. It helps seal in moisture, which keeps skin looking hydrated, young, unlined and healthy—effects to be applauded! However, too much oil can lead to greasy-looking skin, clogged pores and acne—not such terrific outcomes. While oily skin problems usually begin around puberty, they can last well into middle-age for some people. Heredity, hormones and stress seem to be major factors in the development and aggravation of the condition. In general, men produce more sebum than women, but women can undergo spikes in production during all periods of hormonal change—not only at puberty but at the start of each menstrual cycle and during pregnancy and perimenopause.

Oily Skin Home Treatment—A Matter of Control
Scientists have yet to discover a way to turn down the tap of the sebaceous glands, so there’s no cure for oily skin. But it is possible to avoid aggravating the problem further and to control the amount of oil on the surface of the skin, and these efforts will make oily skin much less of a problem.

Just for the record, time slows down everyone’s sebum production, and that which looks like a curse at age 15 is likely to seem more of a blessing at 55. Meanwhile:

  1. Clean skin thoroughly but gently. Oil production is one of the skin’s responses to irritation, so harsh cleansing can make oily skin oilier! A low (acidic) pH is effective at removing oil, so products with glycolic or salicylic acid will clean well without scrubbing. Wash oily areas twice a day, but not more often, for best results. Washing too often removes the skin’s acid mantle which protects it from bacteria. If you make it easier for bacteria to attack your skin, you’re setting yourself up for acne problems.

  2. If necessary, use an after-cleansing purifying tonic to ‘mop up’ excess oil and soothe irritation.

  3. Incorporate alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) creams that also moisturize into your daily regimen. AHAs such as glycolic and lactic acids will gently exfoliate the skin, removing dead cells and excess oils from the surface. They also have been shown to stimulate the body’s production of hyaluronic acid, a key player in boosting the skin’s moisture content. Moisture and oil are not synonymous, and no matter how much you want to get rid of the excess oil, your skin still needs moisture to be healthy! In fact, additional moisturizing ingredients in your daily cream are very helpful. As an alternative, you can use a a beta hydroxy acid such as salicylic acid for exfoliation and hydration. You may need to experiment and see which type of product works best for your individual skin.

  4. Absorb oil that reaches the surface during the day, to keep the skin looking dryer. Oil blotting papers can be used during the day to remove surface oil. Since powder is effective in helping to absorb sebum, powder makeup can help in toning down skin’s oiliness as well as in covering large pores and making the skin’s surface look smoother overall.
