THE DIFINITION OF SENSITIVE SKIN
The condition known as “sensitive skin” is not actually a medical condition per se, but rather a catch-all term for a variety of skin problems. Sensitive skin tends to be thin and delicate, with a tendency towards redness and irritability. According to dermatologists, there are four distinct conditions that fall under the umbrella of sensitive skin, but all share one underlying condition--inflammation. A patient with sensitive skin may experience one or more of the following skin maladies:
- Acne is a common skin disease characterized by pimples on the face, chest, and back. It occurs when the pores of the skin become clogged with oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria.
- Rosacea is a skin disease marked by redness of the face, flushing of the skin, and the presence of pimples and small, visible spider-like veins.
- Contact dermatitis is the name for any skin inflammation that occurs when the skin's surface comes in contact with a substance originating outside the body. There are two kinds of contact dermatitis, irritant and allergic
HOW TO TREAT SENSITIVE SKIN
Whether one is “just” sensitive or actually allergic, chemical ingredients like dyes and fragrances in personal care and household products can have an inflammatory effect on one’s skin. The list of these possible triggers is indeed long, but common everyday items like soaps, lotions, makeup, shampoos, and laundry detergents top the list of possible culprits. This makes finding a skin care regime a bit more challenging, but the result of making the effort is calm, beautiful skin that finally feels comfortable and looks fantastic! It is important to use only non-comedogenic (non pore-clogging), oil and fragrance-free products that contain no dyes, harsh chemicals, or dehydrating alcohols.
